DRAFT RACE REPORT
Six Man Canadian Canoe beats Jersey Rowers in rough conditions in London's Great River Race
http://www.greatriverrace.co.uk/
In stormy conditions which saw hail, thunder and lightning as well as might winds and rough water conditions the Six Man paddling team of Tim Rogers, Chris Nicolas, Simon Young, John Searson and Carl Clinton, expertly coxed by Rob Cassin triumphed in its class, being the first of the Jersey Boats and a close race with the best of the 18 man Dragon Boats.
The Thames Race requires rowers or paddlers to take a passenger (Sophie xxxxx) and Cox the 22mile from Tower Bridge to Richmond. The weather conditions made this years' race especially tough for the Canadian Canoe which is designed for calmer lake crossings in Canada than the turbulent conditions of the race.
We were very disappointed to have been handicapped with the rowing boats which have 8 oars in the water rather than 6 paddles; especially since the rowing boats are much more stable and easy to control, having the benefit of rudders. However we accepted our fate and were resigned to a mediocre performance, explained John Searson
However, Rob Cassin did an expert job to cox and paddle them through the many boats that had been set off ahead of them, frequently having to take evasive action to avoid accident or injury as the little boat weaved its way past 300 other boats all competing for the some stretch of water under each of the bridges.
Once we got further up-stream the weather worsened but the water was less choppy and we were able to find a quicker paddling rhythm and motivation as we started to make ground on the much faster Dragon Boats, said Carl Clinton.
CANT ADD MUCH MORE TEXT UNTIL THE RESULTS ARE AVAILABLE?!
Yeah I agree. I was just trying to make the odds sound better 5 paddlers beating 8 oars, but you are right because this is a more honest assessment of efforts especially since you probably did most of the work having to both steer and paddle! I won't submit anything because we agreed Mick T would do that. These were just some suggested words. I will however copy this to Mick T so that he knows to write about 6 paddlers. I don't think we can submit anything until the results are know, but hopefully that will be soon. Thanks for a great weekend and all the training sessions leading up to it. looking forward to paddling and rowing through the autum and winter!

Dear River Racers,
Thank you for entering the 2011 Great River Race.
We are fast approaching September 17 and the GRR office is really starting to heat up. This is just a quick email to remind you of things you need to do in order to have the best Race you can.
Entries
• Please double check your entry to ensure that it is correct, you should have a non rowing cox and passenger included in your ‘number in boat’ section.
• Please do let us know if you are not 100% sure on your boat type and we will help you classify it.
• If you haven’t entered your crew list, you will not be entered into any gender or age related classes. In addition to this, your certificates will not be ready for you to pick up on Race day and you may incur a P+P charge if you wish to have them sent out to you. We would therefore advise that you fill in all available crew names without delay.
• If we have sent you an email previously asking you to amend your entry in some way, please ensure that these changes have been made and do contact us if you require help.
• Please enter your crew notes and submit any good photos you may have for inclusion in this year’s programme.
• REMEMBER THAT THE DEADLINE FOR PAYMENT AND CHANGES IS AUGUST 30TH!!
Camping/Buses etc
• Please make sure that you book any services you may require sooner rather than later. Last year the campsite reached maximum capacity and we had to end ticket sales early, don’t be disappointed – book today http://www.greatriverrace.co.uk/services.php
• Please note that tickets will not be sent out for services bought, your name will be added to a list. It is therefore important that if you are booking, for example, a large number of bus tickets, that your group either boards together, or everybody is aware of the name the tickets have been booked under.
• Buses leave the campsite at 9am, please ensure that you are there with sufficient time to board. Last year we had over 600 people leave from the campsite so please help us by listening to GRR staff and volunteers.
Logistics
• Please make sure you have given due thought to the various options available for launching and slipping your boats. If you have a large boat that needs to be towed to the start, you could save money by taking it straight to South Dock Marina and having it craned in there. This costs £25 as opposed to the £70 tow from the Finish.
• If you require a tow from the Finish, please double check that you have actually booked and paid for it. George Bowen will be contacting all those requiring tows very shortly
• Please take a moment to look over the Race Weekend details on our website which has comprehensive information regarding secure boat and trailer storage, registration and timings http://www.greatriverrace.co.uk/race_overview.php
Full Race Regulations can be found on our website, http://www.greatriverrace.co.uk/regulations.php
Please note that this page will show as blank if you are using Google Chrome as your internet browser, therefore we would advise that you use Mozilla Firefox or Internet Explorer to view this page.
As we are sure you can appreciate, time starts moving very quickly at this point so we would be most grateful if you could ensure that your entry is up to date as soon as possible so that we can help out if you have any problems.
Don’t forget you can follow us on Twitter (@greatriverrace) and Facebook (The Great River Race) for updates on this year’s Race. And if you are yet to decide a good cause to race for, why not have a look at this year’s official charity, ‘Row2Recovery’ http://www.row2recovery.com/
If you have any questions please do not hesitate to contact us, do not reply to this email, please create a new email to angie.riverrace@googlemail.com with a relevant subject heading or use the contact us form on the website
Kind regards

Brief discussion on trip and agreement on who does what.
Apologies from Simon – London
Cn,RC,CC,SY,TR all confirm they have weekend free.
JS yet to sort out if he has weekend off – will resolve by Wednesday 22nd June.
RC agreed to fix boat by Wednesday 22nd June. JS to supply epoxy and fillers.
TR to look at GRR web site email list of measurements to Rob (by tomorrow) then fill in form ready to be sent by Thursday June 23rd.
Rob to pass details back to Tim by Tuesday 21st June.
Tim and Rob to put out feelers with regard sponsorship.
It was agreed that Paul Bouteloup be asked to be out support driver.
We discussed options for passenger but no conclusion was reached. Requires further discussion?
It was agreed that all will travel with boat on Ferry using a minibus.
Depart Jersey Portsmouth 2110 16th Sept. Arrive 0630 on 17th
Return Poole Jersey 1440 Sunday 18th arrive 1810.
However, subsequent research puts the cost for all seven passengers plus minibus at £818.00 for ferries and cabins! (includes 15% discount) Falles hire have a minibus (9 seater) approx £200 but do not have a roof rack. Total price £1018
Two cars and 8 people same deal (£978) –
Price for two lots of fuel make the price almost identical.
Yet to resolve with Minibus – roof rack? and also whether condor will allow a roof rack on bus on fast ferry as this was grayed out. Other alternatives 4 by boat in car and 3 fly? Or 2 by boat 5 fly and hire a car? – Boat person and Paul Bouteloup go free?
Link up with other rowers re towing etc or stay separate? Get in on the rowers Condor booking if better price?
Everyone’s thoughts on transport please?
It was agreed that training will be done from 0545 to 0700 on week days. Only once a week until 2nd August – twice a week after this date. JS to suggest first training schedule. See below.
June
Thursday 23rd (carl away)
Tuesday 28th (carl away)
July
Friday 8th June (John cannot make earlier in week but you could find a sub?)
Wednesday 13th
Wednesday 20th
Wednesday 27th
I have put deadlines for actions to make sure all is done.
Please copy to everyone your thoughts – or disagreements by the end of Wednesday so we can firm up transport and actions etc. No comment assumes you agree with above or the majority.
Many thanks

Great River Race - Saturday 17th September 2011
I have set-up a mini web-page to capture all the information which we can all share
Event Website
http://www.greatriverrace.co.uk/
Event Details
We are currently registered as TeamJersey (under my email timhjrogers@googlemail.com and password [phone me 07797762051] ) I have noted as a 6 person paddle boat, but may need to revise/update details.
The cost is £285 based on 6 crew at £39.58 + VAT. Not sure if we need to increase that to 8 people to allow for 6 paddlers, 1 cox and 1 passenger. That will add to the cost - which has not yet been paid pending final agreement on details
